How to play QUESTIONABLE

WHAT’S IN THE BOX?

The QUESTIONABLE 2nd Edition includes 400 cards to get people talking.

There are 300 QUESTION cards, with each card featuring a question or prompt. They’re the backbone of each turn, and are what makes QUESTIONABLE…well, QUESTIONABLE! Each player starts with 6 QUESTION cards in their opening hand.

There are 50 BLUSHER cards and each one has a different appreciative question. (By the way, we call them BLUSHERS because when people say nice things about you, it may make you blush!) Each player starts with 1 BLUSHER card in their opening hand.

Then, it gets fun: there are 30 THROWBACK cards. THROWBACK cards are the all-star cards of the game that allow the player to dodge answering a question by throwing it back to the group.

Finally, there are 20 new HECKLER cards. These get to be paired with QUESTION cards and the player picks another person to answer.

SETUP

Shuffle all the cards together, deal 7 cards to each player, and place the remaining cards into a draw pile.

The oldest player goes first. Everyone else offers a card from their hand that they think the person whose turn it is to answer.

The person whose turn it is then shuffles the offered cards and reads them aloud, and chooses to do one of the following:

GAMEPLAY

DURING THEIR TURN, THE PLAYER CAN DO ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • Answers one of the Question cards offered

  • Partners a Throwback card with one of the Question cards, and everyone else must answer

  • Plays a Blusher card, and everyone else must respond

  • Partners a Heckler card with one of the Question cards, and choose a player to answer

  • Alternately, the person whose turn it is can play a Throwback / Blusher / Heckler card from their own hand instead of answering a question

After a turn is complete, all cards played go into a discard pile. Everyone draws a card to have 7 cards in hand to start the next turn.

EARNING POINTS

  • When a Question card is chosen and answered, the person who offered it gets 1 point

  • Whoever plays the Blusher card gets 1 point (because it’s hard to listen to compliments)

  • The person who is heckled (answers the Heckler card) gets 2 points

  • When a Throwback card is played, the person who played it gets 1 point; the person whose question was paired with the Throwback card gets 1 point; and the person with the best response (as determined by the person who played the Throwback card) gets 1 point

WINNING

The way to win Questionable is easy—get the most points! Questionable is played for 3 rounds or until a predetermined point value is reached by one of the players. Success will depend on creating a strategy and knowing the other players well.

HOUSE RULES

There are more ways to play QUESTIONABLE games. Want to create some house rules or variations of play for your playgroup? Go for it! Here’s where we’ll share some suggestions.

PICK A CARD, ANY CARD!

Shuffle any number of QUESTION cards and/or BLUSHER cards and fan them out face down in the middle of the table. During a turn, the Question-EE picks a card randomly from the deck and answers it.

GAME COMPANION

Add a QUESTIONABLE dimension to any card game during which players draw cards! In addition to (or instead of) drawing a card, players can choose to answer a QUESTION card.

GUESSER (2-PERSON GAME)

Player 1 chooses a QUESTION card and writes down what they think Player 2 will answer. Player 2 then answers, and if the answers match, Player 1 gets a point. If the answers don’t match, Player 2 gets a point.

SPLIT & SPEED

If you have a large group of people, consider splitting into smaller groups to limit the length of the game.
